Volcano Country Wild Rivers

Paddlers and Competitors
The Volcano Country Wild Rivers, NWCC, and American Whitewater need your support. Please take a look and support the conservation of our wild rivers!

Washington’s legendary volcanoes — Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier and Mount Adams — are the source of wild, free-flowing rivers that rush through deep gorges and basalt canyons on their way to the Columbia River. Rivers such as the Lewis, Cispus and Green provide clean water, important fish and wildlife habitat, and outstanding recreational experiences. Yet hundreds of miles of these and other Volcano Country rivers have no permanent protection from new dams, hardrock mining such as the copper mine proposed recently in the Green River valley, and other threats.
The Volcano Country Wild Rivers Coalition is leading an effort to protect 200 miles of rivers and streams in Southwest Washington’s “Volcano Country” under the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Wild and Scenic River designation - the strongest protection a river can receive - will permanently protect the free-flowing character, water quality and special ecological, cultural and recreational values of these rivers.
The Volcano Country Wild Rivers Coalition is working to build support for our proposal from a wide array of stakeholders, including local elected officials, Tribes, hunters and anglers, local businesses, conservation and recreation groups, and the general public.
