Volcano Country Wild Rivers
The Volcano Country Wild Rivers, NWCC, and American Whitewater need your support. Please take a look and support the conservation of our wild rivers!
Washington’s legendary volcanoes — Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier and
Mount Adams — are the source of wild, free-flowing rivers that rush
through deep gorges and basalt canyons on their way to the Columbia
River. Rivers such as the Lewis, Cispus and Green provide clean water,
important fish and wildlife habitat, and outstanding recreational
experiences. Yet hundreds of miles of these and other Volcano Country
rivers have no permanent protection from new dams, hardrock mining such
as the copper mine proposed recently in the Green River valley, and
other threats. The Volcano Country Wild Rivers Coalition is leading an effort to protect 200 miles of rivers and streams in Southwest Washington’s “Volcano Country” under the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Wild and Scenic River designation - the strongest protection a river can receive - will permanently protect the free-flowing character, water quality and special ecological, cultural and recreational values of these rivers.
The Volcano Country Wild Rivers Coalition is working to build support for our proposal from a wide array of stakeholders, including local elected officials, Tribes, hunters and anglers, local businesses, conservation and recreation groups, and the general public.

Northwest Creeking Competition Our Roots
History:
The Northwest Creeking Competition formerly known as the Canyon Creek Race was started to preserve and save the scenic lower stretch of Canyon Creek WA from hydro electric development.Today the NWCC is a weekend long whitewater festival with courses on both Canyon Creek and The East Fork Lewis River and every April kayakers from all over the West come to the scenic Washington state to celebrate the river life!
Timeline:
-1990’s, the race started in the early 90’s and continued under the Oregon Cup series till early
2000
-2000 saw a thriving event with an abundance of sponsors and competitors.
-But by 2006 the combination of low attendance and inadequate water levels seemed to be
bring the CC race to a halt.
-In 2007 a group of community paddlers came together hoping to re-ignite a race on Canyon
Creek and the “Northwest Creeking Competition” was born. 2007 proved to be a record year
with perfect flows, warm temps and record attendance.
-But then in 2009 Canyon Creek suffered a catastrophic landslide forcing the NWCC to change
its venue. The race was moved to the Sunset Falls section on the East Fork Lewis R. just a
short distance from its original location.
-2012, today the NWCC is a thriving 2 day event and one of the biggest races in the country!
The event boasts 2 amazing race courses on both the E.F. Lewis R. and Canyon Creek. The
event headquarters is set at scenic Sunset Falls Campground where participants can enjoy
a great view of racers negotiating beautiful Sunset Falls, enjoy a great BBQ, music, and a all
around fun time! Day two competitors head over to Canyon Creek to challenge themselves on
one of the best race courses in the nation!
